Hello,

I am a 4th year D.O. student considering applying to Pathology residencies however I am couples matching with another 4th year D.O. student who is also choosing Pathology.
We really do not care where we end up and probably will apply to about 30 programs. She wants to do a fellowship in Forensics after training.
My class rank is in top 10% and my board scores are good. I did 2 years of research in undergrad in medical micro. and molecular genetics and have one paper (not soley mine but my name is on there).
Basically my question is, do we have a good shot of getting into the same area or program by couples matching, both choosing this speciality and both being D.O.?
Thanks for any responses in advance!

I would think if your significant other has similar scores, grades, etc as you, a program would be very happy to get two quality residents as one package deal.

From what I have heard from some program directors, some programs would be hesitant about offering positions in the same residency field at the same hospital to two folks in a couples match. They might take you a bit more seriously if you were "fully" committed (i.e. married). (I guess because if something goes wrong, they figure one or both will leave). Although to me couples matching sounds like a fairly serious commitment. I would suggest at least looking at places where there are multiple programs close to each other, because that may be your best option.

Thanks for your replies! BCMD, I just visited your website and it is very informative. Great work!

I was struggling between Pathology and ER and was considering applying to both, but I know I have to stick to one, and since I am absolutley loving my Pathology elective now, I have decided to go for Pathology.

Although I have been searching for information on couples matching into the same field, I hope that we are able to match together somewhere. I agree I do not know how residency program directors will look at two applicants couples macthing in the same field at the same hospital. We are looking into different hospitals in the same city, although there aren't many. Thanks for your replies!

Thanks! Glad you liked the site.

Although there is a chance this info is faulty, I think a path couple matched at the brigham this year.

Also, a friend of mine and her then boyfriend matched radiology/pathology.

I think that with proper communication with the programs you are interested in you should be able to find an acceptable couples position.

Well we ended up applying to 34 programs all over the country. Hopefully we will end up either at the same hospital or in the same area.
