Hi everyone!
I'm interested in pursuing a career in anatomic pathology and I'm applying to residency programs soon since applications are outside the match. I was wondering if anyone had any advice on what to make sure I include/get across in my cover letter/personal statement? I'm just not sure what information I should focus on in my letter, and only a one page letter seems hard to fully communicate why I'd be a good candidate for their program. I guess it also feels like a lot less info that I'm able to give them compared to previous applications I've done (undergrad, vet school), which I think also makes me nervous.
Obviously doesn't have to be pathology specific, I'd really appreciate any advice anyone has! Thanks!

I’m CP not AP, but we mostly want to know why you want to do pathology. Talking about unique experiences and your attributes is good too, but don’t waste valuable characters just listing info that is in your CV.

AP here. In addition to talking about why you like pathology (obviously) include your soft skills. Teamwork, getting along with others, being able to work in a multidisciplinary environment, being resilient when you encounter challenges. Residency is a crucible and you have to be able to play well with others.

Also, pick out what unique parts about THAT program you are interested in. Make them feel special. Let them know that you have researched their program. This will have to change from letter to letter of course. Do they have a specialty path service like derm or GI, and that is something you are into? Or a research area that really speaks to you? Say so.

Lastly, something I also advise for cover letters (if you have room) is talking about what your goals for the residency are. Not just "here is why I want you to accept me and here is why I love path" but "this is what I plan to become good at or pursue in residency". Show them that you are coming in with a plan and have achievable goals.

Good luck! 🙂
