Hey guys I am signed up to take patho next semester (junior in undergrad) wondering if that is looked upon as a "plus" since it is a 400 level course (490) and a medical field related course. I am genuinely interested in it regardless but was wondering.

Thanks
I can't speak for Dental adcoms but when I applied to med programs they liked it. Its a good course to have under your belt.

i'm takin it too this semester, i think all upper level bios are probably looked at as some sort of "plus" if u do well. so pathos just the same, altho i think taking patho400 compared to like...a 400 level ecology course, is probably better bc pathos a ds course, so at the UG level ull be gettin the basics. its probably more for your benefit then the adcoms really caring that much.

Its good to have but dont expect it to be the key to d-school admission.

oGPA, sGPA and DAT will matter a lot more in the grand scheme of things.

I am supposed to take Bio Chemistry, Genetics, Patho, and Cell and Developmental Bio Next semester in an attempt to raise my science gpa due to a poor Freshman year. Is that smart in that case since you said its not about the courses? I was aiming to have a good "heavy" courseload to show adcoms that I can take big courses and do well.

A heavy workload will probably blow up in your face. Its tough to handle that many science classes at one time. I wouldn't recommend it and you wont win any brownie points for ending the semester with a mediocre GPA. I always recommend two science classes, two labs and two easy liberal arts classes for a nice and balanced load. I see no point in trying to be a hero and taking 3 or 4 hard science classes. Chance are you'll slack somewhere or even get a bad professor and whoops there goes your sGPA. If there's no rush, which there usually isnt, take your time and take all the basic science courses and ace those. While an A in Biochem is awesome, having a B- in A&P isnt good. Additionally, you can drop one of the sciences and just take a 12 credit / 3 science course semester instead.

In the end, the quantitative factors such as GPA matter significantly more than qualitative factors such as hard class or not. Schools dont have time to compare applicants qualitatively nor is it really fair. The best way it to simply look at the GPAs. sGPA is the most important factor, in my opinion, and is often what helps or hurts applicants.

How do I know? I have a weak overall GPA, but I killed the science courses and got into d-school due to my sGPA and BCP scores. My DAT was respectable but my sGPA and BCP were probably the main reasons.

if youre still in UG, i dont reccomend this. if youre a postbacc, thats a fine schedule. ive been taking 4 upper level bios every semester as a postbacc, and 4.0ing them, so its perfectly doable. however if youre in UG theres really no need for u to take that many science courses at once. but...if you plan on applying at the end of your junior year and thats why youre trying to raise your science gpa now by taking 4 courses then i dunno, if u think u can 4.0 it then do it. if you think youll get a B+ in one of those courses, dont do it.
also, it depends how low your sci + bcp really are, if these GPAs are already fine then why take so many sciences, u might mess up your gpa? if your gpas are crappy, then its something to consider in order to raise them.

I can tell you that we have to take 3 years of pathology in our university and it was hell every year. hahaha 😀 but at the end of it, you'll find out that it helps you a lot in your practice in the clinic because it helps you to prevent some complicated issue that may occur due to the present other systematic illness.

It's kinda interesting because we had a clinical practice and we diagnosed someone with AIDS and he didn't know.. :S (kinda sad when all he wanted was a dental treatment)

But overall go for it if you can and try your best.. it'll stress you out a lot because of the load of information that you need to learn but it's worth very moment of it.

Good luck!!

even a post bacc doesnt require 4 classes. Most people that take post bacc's are non trads that work during the day. Its perfectly acceptable to take 2 science courses per semester while working. However even for a regular UG student, I wouldn't advice taking more than 2 science courses + liberal arts course(s) or 3 science courses for the whole semester.

While everyone a heavy load is important it cannot be emphasized over oGPA, sGPA and DAT scores. While its nice that molar is able to maintain a 4.0 with such a heavy load. Most people can't do that.

lol ok

just putting my opinion here about pathophysio, its very interesting subject, but at the same time living hell. It was hard to extract information from things that I have forgotten. Personally it was waaayyy harder than biochem.
