I know this is rather early to start thinking about such a thing, but am I correct in assuming that interns doesn't start getting paycheck until late july, at the earliest? My sole source of income for rent is my monthly HPSP paycheck(barely enough to cover monthy expenses), which will end in May. Do they give advances?
Thanks, Jacob.

maybe it depends by hospital, but i haven't met anyone who's ever gotten advances for housing...but i could be wrong....you can check with the hospital you match at, once you start getting mail from their housestaff office...you can also check with your new department.

One last thing to do is talk with your financial aid officer -- sometimes they have monies for small low interest relocation loans that you can take out, and just pay back once you start making money. when you get paid sometimes depends on how big an institution it is, and how quickly they can get their act together -- usually by the end of your second or third week though.

good luck. 🙂

JACOB,
did you get a deferment from the military?

I did get a deferment but not for what I was hoping for. Tried for rads, too many applicants, so I got a one year deferral for any prelim program. Seens like a lot of people ended up with one year deferments.

You can also get commercial loans for relocation etc. Check with your fin aid people. (And you thought you had seen the last of them!)

I am very familiar with military medicine since I was a Navy Corpsman before medical school.

Those one year deferments are an example of the military keeping their options open. They are preparing themselves for the possibility that we may be at war or in a war time deployment schedule for the next couple of years.

Those one year deferments mean that they plan on sending you to an operational billet once you are done with your internship.

Don't be surprised if and when this happens.

Good luck and good hunting. Hooorahhh Devil Doc.

I don't know of any advances given, although some programs do give you funds for moving expenses or others take out loans to pay for them.

I believe we got paid after 2 weeks of work and then every 2 weeks since. Most probably follow the same rule...

I would see what options your school, residency program and bank have to offer.

best of luck...

Medloans has a MEDEX loan to help with the extra costs of residency interviews and relocation expenses - up to $10,000 (or less if you want a smaller amount). It's lower interest than most commercial loans, but slightly higher than stafford loans.
