I know, I know...don't go into any career for the money but my state's veterinary school is extremely expensive...x4 years of tuition!! How do vet's handle high tuition? Even if they can take out loans to cover the tuition how do they pay them back with their salaries?

Payment plans from loans! If you're from Ohio (which it says you are), your tuition isn't that high. Check out Cornell, UPenn or Tufts tuition. YIKES!

haaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahahahahahahaha

🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

all i can do is laugh (and cry, and die a little inside...)

if you thought Ohio's IS tuition was bad, think about poor ole me who's going OOS to CSU (even that was cheaper than Tufts IS)... my dream is to become a shelter vet btw...

i'm pretty screwed.

Well, I don't know if I'd say any vet school tuition "isn't that bad", lol, but some are definitely worse than others. While Ohio may not be the most expensive school out there, it's still relatively expensive compared to some. It was (well, will be, since I'm still in school, lol) cheaper for me to do 1 yr OOS tuition & then 3 yrs IS at TN than all 4 yrs IS at Ohio, so I understand OPs POV. But I agree... I definitely shudder to think of some of the other schools... back in highschool I used to think I wanted to go to Penn, b/c I love PA & it'd still be close to home... but I just couldn't live w/ the thought of the extra expense.

As far as how it's paid off... it's definitely rough, but there are ways to make it better... take out only what you have to, live meagerly & accept that all the new toys, gizmos, & gadgets just may not be realistic, try to work during the summers to make some $$, pay off interest as you can to decrease it being added to the principle balance, etc. And there are also the government repayment programs, depending on if that is something one is interested in & willing to do. You're right to think about it though OP... it's a big commitment & not one someone should go into w/o seriously considering.

Oh my bad, i didn't mean to make it seem like it shouldn't be a huge concern or belittle the OP in any way. Being self-centered as I usually am, I was just feeling the jab in the tum tum again for what seems like a financial suicide on my part.

I mean, the smartest thing to do would be to do something like engineering where you don't need an advanced degree to make decent money. Or something like Chemistry PhD where you're given a stipend to get your degree and you can make big bucks with your degree. Or even MD, where the debt:income ratio is nearly not as high.

But hey, if you know you want to become a vet... then for the most part, it's going to suck. And not everyone has the luxury of having cheap(er) options.

No offense taken Minner... I actually was responding to lazli, I'm just a super slow ADD typer atm, lol. And it wasn't a defensive statement in the least, more slightly humerous, but internets and all... I just know I've definitely said "well, it's not THAT bad" & then think to myself, "no it really is, it just could be worse," lol. At the same time, I know I'd take the "worse" if it were my only option (Disclaimer: which I would have had to if I wasn't getting married this summer, b/c I didn't get into my IS & marrying a resident is pretty much the only way to get TN residency, before people start yelling at me saying TN doesn't allow residency after a year, or getting false hopes of residency, lol)

hmmm... now that's a thought. i'd put out a craigslist ad for someone in CO who wants to marry me for 4 years... but i think i signed a thing that said that i will always pay the OOS fees (not sure if there's wiggle room for marriage).

if a mail order bride is legal for citizenship, craigslist bride for state residency can't be that bad right??? 😉

You should check on it. If the wiggle room is there... you can find anything on Craig's list, right!?! 😀

Speaking of tuition:salary ratios, I was just having this conversation with my mom (who is an MD, btw). She asked what the average starting salary is for a SA vet on the west coast and so I checked the records. The national average for vets with less than 5 years experience is between $50,000-$70,000. Sadly, this means I will be paying back my OOS loans for the next 25 years...

Funny, because I can say the exact same thing about Ohio compared to Tufts being from Massachusetts. 1 year OOS tuition at $57k!! plus 3 years in-state at ohio is cheaper than me doing 4 years at Tufts.
