Hi Everyone! I recently got off of the waitlist and will now be attending vet school! And I have been thinking of getting a new laptop for awhile now, but I am really torn by all of the different options there are out there when it comes to getting a PC. I am pretty set on getting a PC too, I just need some help from people who have a better feel for what is really practical for vet school (I know everyone love Mac, I'm not a hater, I just want to stick with PC). I am willing to put forth some good money for this thing, but I don't want to over do it. I honestly have been considering a lenovo yoga 3 pro for awhile, but I am not sure how much I would really use all of its features.

Any recommendations?

Thanks for the link! The only thing is that it is from beginning of last year...a lot of new stuff has come out since then. The tech age is moving fast!! :0 🙁
True, true. Try contacting your school to see if they recommend anything specific. Illinois actually gave us a sheet with their req's on it....I'm sure other schools have that info as well!

I wouldn't just run out and buy something that meets specs your school recommends.... I'd get in touch with current students and ask THEM what's needed for your specific program.

Here at MN, they publish some requirements that are universally considered excessive by the students.... if you were just to take it at face value you could sink a lot of money into an unnecessarily capable - and physically hefty - laptop. On the other hand, at some other schools, they may actually really mean it for ... reasons. You won't know without talking to current students.

Our school has a Facebook page for the incoming class, and many upperclassmen join it for a while ... that's where this sort of advice gets distributed. Maybe your school has something similar?

I know you said you're not interested in Macs, but as someone who recently made the switch, I can't stress how amazing these laptops are. It's no wonder that everyone uses them for school. Make sure that your school doesn't use a specific one. I know Iowa State vet students must use a laptop specified by the school, for example. The one tip that I received from multiple schools is to get an extended warranty for the 4 years. That way you don't have to stress out about having to buy a new one in the middle of a school year if something happens. Also, get a good external hard drive and backup your notes daily or at least weekly in case your computer just happens to die. Aside from that, I don't really think it matters what you get, but again I recommend a Macbook Pro. 😛
