PCOMers,

I have just been accepted to GA-PCOM for the class of 2009. I am very excited. However, I have my wedding planned for Oct. 8th 2005. This date is set in stone and I cannot change it (for fear of being killed by my future wife). Can you please give me any feedback regarding PCOM's curriculum (ie. semester/quarter system, tests in blocks, Midterms and Final dates, vacations). From what I have been told our school will mirror yours, so I can get an idea. I can't really do much about the situation, but at least I can ease my stress if I knew that Oct. is a quieter time in the school year. Thanks for any stress relief

Don't know abut PCOM, but Oct is often when midterms pop up.

Talk to your fiance. She should be understanding since she'll eventually benefit from your medical degree, too. Give her some time to think about it and make arrangements. There is plenty of time to change the date...I'd recommend before or after first semester, rather than in the middle of it.

Med school is tough on relationships and med student spouses really have to be flexible.

Absolutely. I don't know how anyone could get married right smack in the middle of the semester.

How about during the summer break between MSI and MSII? At the interviews I've been at it has been recommended that this would be a good time to get married since it will be the last big break you will have.

No time for a honeymoon or to get settled in the middle of the semester, though.

Hey guys thanks for the adivce. I have a lot to discuss with my fiancee. But I really need some PCOM students to help me out with some info! Come on guys give me some love.

Not sure what PCOM-Atl schedule will be like or how closely it will mirror Philly campus.

Now since the OP asked about the Philly campus

The schedule is different every day. You might have anatomy lab from 8-12 one day, and 10-11 the next. There really isn't any block testing. Expect a test every 3-4 weeks with OPP practicals and writtens spread out in between. Since the schedule is broken down into such details, the final schedule won't be available until probably 1 month before classes start.

I echo the sentiments of the others ... do not get married in the middle of anatomy. Not only will missing a few days be hazardous to you (in terms of amount of info missed and your labmates killing you for missing labs), but planning wedding/honeymoon is a mental distraction that you cannot afford.

Best time is between 1st and 2nd year. Other times available are the 2 weeks of winter break during MS1 and MS2 years, 1 week of spring break during MS1/MS2 years, and the winter month that you get off during MS3/MS4 years.

While there are some scheduling differences between schools, the big picture won't change.

As you can see on the above calender link, PCOM works in Trimesters. Therefore you will have your first set of finals around the week before Thanksgiving. As previously stated though, since exams usually fall every 3-4 weeks, you will most likely have an exam during the week of your wedding. And this IS during Anatomy- which you will quickly realize that missing even one lab can put you behind.

All that being said, I had a wedding to attend in Florida the weekend before my Anatomy final and I chose to go (granted I was in my room studying when everyone was prepartying)! Would I have done better had I stayed at school and studied...who knows...but I don't regret it and IMO- do NOT miss out on the important moments in your family and friends' lives! There's more to life than medical school!

Also, if you talk to your professors at the start of the semester and explain your situation, hopefully they will be understanding and maybe even let you take the exam earlier or later (although less likely). Good Luck! I'm sure everything will work out!

I know this is in advance, but best wishes for a happy wedding...and an even happier honeymoon!

Thanks for all of your support. I am a chiropractor so hopefully I have this anatomy stuff down pretty well, or i'm in real trouble. I would really only miss one day of school and that would be a Friday. I guess it's a decision I have to make with my future wife. Good luck to all of you and happy holidays

i'm a first year pcom student, if you PM me with your e mail address, I'll send you my first trimester grid which includes all lectures, exams, and dissections.

Thanks for all the support. A big decision to make. By the way did you guys have off for columbus day by any chance?

Does any school (elem, HS, college, grad, prof) get Columbus Day off? This is a joke right?....I mean we do have to work on Flag day too!!!

Yes some schools actually get off for Columbus day believe it or not. I guess you grew up in a "detached" area of the country. Besides, it was a simple question no answers dripping with sarcasm necessary.

Enlighten me as to which medical schools get Columbus day off as a holiday....
And Id like to know which hospitals grant the day as a holiday as well. Id love to apply for a residency there..

Your original post included "elem, HS, college, grad, prof" if you go back and read it. That is what I was referring to. Actually, PCOM gets off for MLK what makes that more important in terms of med school? (not political correctness). I take it LECOM is getting Lax seeing that you have nothing better to do than make sarcastic comments in a thread that you have nothing to offer in.

Ummm....last time I checked MLK day is NOT Columbus day. Yes, we here at LECOM get that day off too....however those of us on clinicals may or may not get that day off. I know lecom gives us off 3 days for christmas (24,25,26) yet Im scheduled in the ED on the 26th. Am I going to complain. No, actually its fun. I also had to work in the ED on Thanksgiving (ok well wednesday night 11p-7a), I was in the Bronx and had a great time.
Look, my point is that your going into a profession that doesnt get many days off.... and your asking about a secondary holiday...that even banks are open on? Come on....

Your point is well taken, especially since I have worked EMT shifts on Christmas eve. However, the only reason I even asked is that my wedding is supposed to be Columbus day weekend. I guess it was more wishful thinking than actually expecting it to be....
