PDA, hey it's almost 2005

Ok guys. I've searched, and most threads that are useful on this topic are outdated. It's now almost 2005, so I'm wondering what current ones are worthy of dental use?

1. I use Outlook as a color-coded calendar
2. I use Outlook to sync my contacts
3. I'd like to utilize dental pharmacology software w/o a hitch
4. I'd like to have a Merck manual work flawlessly
5. WiFi is important, bluetooth is optional
6. Speed is a must
7. Expandable space is also a must (CF card optimal, but will opt for other media types)
8. Battery life is also important. At least 6-9 hours on a full charge with normal use.

I'm currently using a Palm Zire, but I like both Pocket PC and Palm OS. I merely need the most convenient and reliable system to use during clinic. It's ony a few months away and I figured I should get one now.

Budget is around $300.

A strong contender in my list is the Dell Axim X30 (or maybe even the X50).

The Dell axim is the best bang for your buck. I just purchased one from Dell's website. I got the 624 mhz X30, mainly because my budget was the same as yours. The X50 is nice, but about $100 more.

However, go to ebay and type in "axim coupons". Right now they have either 20% off of axim X30 or 25% off the new X50. I got the 20% off for the x30 and saved $80. With the 25% off the X50, you could save up to $100. The coupon only cost me $1.99. Pretty dang good deal huh? So, if you do it this way, you could definitely get the newer X50 for what you have budgeted. Let me know if you have any questions. Good luck.

Good advice from the above poster, although I strongly favor the Palm OS over the Windoze junk OS.

However, post your question in the technology forum if you want additional viewpoints from residents and students as to what they find most functional.

Speaking of Dental PDAs, I'm looking for some good software for mine. I want some great dental-oriented pharm software so that when my patient comes in to clinic with a list of drugs, I can put them in and see what DENTAL complications/contraindications are involved.

Any ideas?

There are a number of programs like this (do a search here on SDN or on Google and you'll find a ton of info).

FWIW, at my school the two most popular products seem to be Epocrates and Dental Lexi-Drugs. I don't have any firsthand experience with them but from what others have told me it seems Lexi-Drugs is better but you'll pay for it (~$50 for students, plus the cost of subscription). I think they may have a downloadable trial version available on their website if you want to look into it.
