Hey all,,

I am a 4th year medical student and looking at going to a competitive residency program. I am scheduled to do an away rotation coming up in the next few months at my top program choice. It is in a consult service, and I was wondering if any of you have any tips. I feel that my application is good on paper, but I just don't want to shoot myself in the foot while there. Any tips? All are appreciated.

My guess is you probably already know most of what you have to do. Work hard, be willing to stay late. Offer to go see the consults yourself, look up the latest info about the consult, ask questions and come in the next day having read something about the patients you are seeing. It won't guarentee you anything, but it's a good idea to show them how hard you're willing to work when you're an intern.

Stitch gave you some good advice. Remember that away rotations can help or hurt- you have a month to look good, but also a month to "mess up". So always be at your best (medically, socially, and otherwise). It is good to be friendly but not "too familiar"- remember that you are a guest at the program. It is also good to avoid negative comments about anyone or anything, including your own school, other programs, individuals, etc. Show interest in the program and in your rotation, and try to get along with everyone. And keep your eyes and ears open. You also have a month to decide if this should be your "top program", and maybe your interest will wane after you see the program or department from the inside.
