Hi, I am going into pediatrics and was curious what the general word about pediatric critical care is; ie, how competitive are fellowships, what is the job market like, is one limited to academic practice, and the like? I appreciate any and all insights.

My understanding is that, with 2 major exceptions (Peds EM and Peds Cardio), pediatric subspecialties in general are not competitive as of late. Of these, I believe Peds Critical Care is one of the least competitive.

That said, I always wondered how many job opportunities were available for graduating fellows. Thankfully, critically ill children are few and far between when compared with the number of critically ill adults...
