Pediatric OB/GYN? Does it exist?

Almost every field in medicine has a pediatric component/sub-speciality, but I never heard of Pediatric ob/gyn. If I go into ob/gyn, can I sub-specialize in Pediatric ob/gyn? How?

Work in an area that has a high Medicaid population. There are plenty of pediatric OB cases there. You'll also have to deal with the occasional adult, but that's the price of doing business.

it definently exists, its a fellowship after residency. i think you can also do it as gyn fellowship after a pediatric residency.

just go to any county hospital. you'll be hard-pressed to find an OB patient over the age of 18.

Leukocyte, I hate to laugh because I understand how hard it can be to pick a career path, but dude. Is there a single specialty, sub-specialty, or super-sub-specialty that you have not considered at this point?

Well, application time is at the doors, and I am still not sure what to apply for. It is driving me crazy. All I know is that:

1) I want to work with kids.
2) I want to work in a Surgical speciality.
3) I am interested in the Heart and/or the CNS.

This translates into:
-Pediatric CT surgery
-Pediatric Nsx

For Pediatric CT surgery, I have to go through 5+ years of General Sx. I hate General Surgery. This means I will have to be miserable for the next 5-7 years of my life until I start fellowship in CT sx. And what if I do not land a fellowship after those miserable 5-7 years? I will be stuck in General Surgery!

Pediatric Nsx, and Nsx in general is too competetive for me. I really have no realistic shot at Nsx.

So, I started looking at "other" surgical specialties. According to the ACS, there are 8 surgical specialities:

1-GS and its subspecialties
2-ENT
3-OPHTHAL
4-UROLOGY
5-PLASTICS
6-OB/GYN
7-NEUROSURGERY
8-ORTHOPAEDICS

I do not like GS, ENT, UROLOGY, nor PLASTICS.

This leaves me with Ophthal, OB/GYN, Orthopaedics and Nsx.

Ophthal and Nsx are too competetive.

This leaves me with Ob/Gyn and Orthopaedics!!!

I hate "adult medicine", so this leaves me with:

-Pediatric Orthopaedics
-Ob/Gyn (Pediatric Ob/gyn)

And now for a response that actually answers the original question (what a novel idea)! Yes, there is a peds/adol ob/gyn subspecialty a fellowship after residency, though i'm unsure of the length. There are only a few programs around the country, I think Brigham has one and maybe Baylor...I really dont know. I think the specialty goes way beyond simply managing pregnant adols... you get trained in peds gyn surgery, ie. reconstruction and repair of congenital anomolies.

And just to add my own jackass comment so no one else feels bad...Ortho not competitive...what planet are you from???

Thanks Drlove! Peds Gyn sounds interesting from what you describe.

And about Ortho, yes it is very very very competetive, but in my situation, it is less competetive than Nsx and ophthalmology since I have done rotations in Orthopedics and made some connections in the field. I never did Nsx or Ophthalmology rotations, and thus, I have no chance in matching in those fields.

Now, by the process of elimination....Neurosurgery, Ophthalmology, and Orthopedics are all very competetive, I have a very small chance at matching.

I do not like Urology, Plastics, and ENT.

I do not like General Surgery, and Peds Surgery is very competetive (only 30 programs) and requires 7+ years of General Surgery.

So, Ob/Gyn is the only surgical speciality left (that is reasonably competetive...unlike Neuro, Ortho, ENT....). So, by the process of elimination, I chose OB/GYN. Now, I like helping sick children...so this translates into Pediatric Ob/Gyn or Maternal Fetal Medicine.
