Hey guys. This isn't a "give me sympathy" post. But, I would like some advice. I'm almost at the end of third year (one rotation left after this one) and I am in the middle of my pediatrics rotation.

My application thus far has been mostly geared towards psychiatry, but I am really enjoying pediatrics! The children are super interesting and I feel I am a good fit for the environment. At this point, I cannot get a letter from a pediatrics Acting Internship/Sub Internship since I won't be able to schedule it in time. But I can get letters from other faculty I have worked with closely. I do have many volunteer activities involving pediatric populations and my STEP 1 is a 235, US medical student. Do I have a decent shot at matching? Anything I can do at this point? I am NOT set on matching anywhere competitive. But I am set on matching in NYC. I don't care much where I match as long as it's in this area.

Sure. Get a letter from your pediatric rotation now, use your next rotation to do something in pediatrics and get a letter. Write in your personal statement you had planned to do psych, but then got to treat children and had an epiphany. If matching in NYC is your priority, apply to both Psych and Peds.

Absolutely. Get a letter (or two) from your current rotation. Pediatrics doesn't mind so much if you have letters from other specialties, so you can absolutely use a letter from another field you work in, just make sure they are aware you're applying to peds.

I had all of my letters prior to my Sub-I, so that's not a deal breaker. Keep working hard, get good letters (not all of them have to be from peds people). Your Step 1 score is great for peds, and lots of programs in NY.

PM me, I think I can help you out with the pediatrics matching. I was in the same boat last year

Get letters from your current rotation, then you'll be set and won't have to worry about Sub-I/AI letters. I tell all med students to get their letters from third year.

That's a great idea. It also shows people that you are serious about your peds rotation.
