Peds and USMLE scores

How important are USMLE scores in obtaining Peds residencies? I performed a little below average on Step 1 -- is it essential that I take Step 2 (and show improvement) prior to applying? I'm hoping to end up at a larger program since I will likely pursue a fellowship afterwards. Any comments/observations would be appreciated!

I was in the same boat-below avg Step 1. I took Step 2 in August, and my score was 40 points higher. I got interviews everywhere I applied, including schools that were rumored to have a cutoff, so I think it may have helped. Some will average your scores, too. The trick is that you have to do better!
