Hi, I'm currently a D1 at Penn thinking about specializing in peds. I have no idea what I should be doing, what grades I need or whatever else is required- can anyone here give me advice on what to set for goals and a timeline?

Asking the upper class men who are also interested in peds would help. I guess getting high grades and shadowing the peds clinic and doing all the outreach events for kids would help.

Oh and of course, liking working with children.

Top 1/3 rank should be enough to get your foot in the door. Experience working with kids in any fashion (doesn't have to be related to dentistry) is also a must. Externing at a couple progams is also a good idea. Finally, volunteer and hang out in the peds clinic when you get a chance so the faculty know your face and can write you letters of rec ... just don't be annoying about it.

Emphasis on the annoying part. Doesn’t hurt to get involved with some form of research project that applies to pediatric dentistry. Make sure you get as much exposure to it as you can now, because it’s very unique in the challenges it presents. You have to love it, to survive it for an extended period of time.
