Hi friends,

I am wondering if someone can please help with this question:

After residency in U.S., if someone (US Citizen) wants to work in Dubai/Abu Dhabi, which residency option has better scope out of these:

1. Peds
2. Peds + Fellowship (which?)
3. IM

Would greatly appreciate any answer to this specific question🙏

I know NIL about working in the UAE (I had one pt from the UAE when I was a resident, but they brought the patient to me - with their own flight doctor, and the BEST nurse I have EVER seen - an Arab woman in an abaya, with a hijab, and the THICKEST Scottish accent I've EVER heard, outside of Scotland proper).

The answer, OF COURSE, is, "It depends". Peds does kids work. IM is adults. Subspec Peds is just that. I mean, your VERY general question gives no specificity.

Thanks for commenting, very kind of you. Yes I am looking for a rough/general answer to the question posted.

I am not actually understanding your "specific" question about "scope".
The scope of peds is children's health.
The scope of peds fellowship is kids with (insert correct body system) problems
The scope of IM is adult medicine.

Are you actually more wondering "What specialty has the best job opportunities for a USMD wanting to work in Dubai/Abu Dhabi?". Because I'm not sure the general residency forum is the forum best suited to answer that question. You might want to consider asking in one of the international forums or in the specialty forum. I've seen job advertisements for Dubai before but don't know anyone who looked into working in the middle east to know details of the opportunities.

Yikes, I now see the confusion. I wasn't asking about the scope of the field itself, but rather "which residency option has better scope" in that region. So yes, basically "What specialty has the best job opportunities for a USMD wanting to work in Dubai/Abu Dhabi?". Apologies, I should have worded my query better.

So you mean I should post it under "General International Discussion"?

Thank you.

Hi,

I have some info on this as have some friends and Myself that have contemplated and looked at the option in UAE.

The short answer is, it depends.

Based on my research: if you are a female, best bet is Gyne/Obs, with American board certification and at least 3-5 years of work experience post training you will get a good high paying job.

Pediatrics is needed but they dont have a shortage of that. EU/UK trained pediatricians and GPs are quite a few and also FCPS trained people from India/Pakistan to fill those needs.

Best best is Internal medicine- followed by a fellowship, after that 3-5 yrs of experience in practice.

Highest paid jobs are after 8 years of experience and some almost close to what you would get in US.

Hope that helps
