Our school taught us, fight with Penicillin and prophylaxis with Amoxicillin. Could you tell me what do you prefer? Please consider effectiveness, cost and patient compliance (dose, side effects etc) Thank you.

Amoxicillin because its only TID and will thus have higher compliance

That sounds logical. Penicillin for active non-isolated infections because it's narrow spectrum. Amoxicillin for pre-med because it's absorbed better and TID.

For some reason, I have always written prescriptions for Amoxicillin. Since residency and even after practicing for over 15 years....for infections and prophylaxis. For some reason, my patients have done well with this antibiotic.

Pen vk is the drug of choice for odontogenic infections.

Amoxicillin should be rx'd if sinus infection is suspected.

If pen allergy, clindamycin.

had a pt allergic to both once, think I did erythromycin, don't really recall. the epocrates app is pretty crucial in those rare instances,

Thank you all for your responses. Epocrates app is really good though not as good as Lexicomp online but well it's a paid service which as a student we got for free.
