Any Penn State students out there?

I'll be an M1 this August and am looking forward very much to attending. I do have one question though. What do you think of the on campus housing?? Any other input about what your experiences at the school have been like would be appreciated. Thanks so much!!

I'll bump this up for others to see...in the meantime if I see any students around (its Sunday and they tend to be rather scarce) I"ll ask them to respond. I've seen the on-campus housing and while it was a tad spartan for me (as most on-campus housing is) I'm sure it suits others - but this response is better coming from someone who actually lives there. 😀

Kimberli, Thanks for getting the word out for me. 🙂 Hopefully I can deal with spartan.

I am in University Manor East...it is not bad. Very convienent to just walk to class. I don't socialize much, but there are a bunch of other students who hang out regularly and seem to like it. Only one bathroom in a 2 bedroom unit though, a drawback in my book. There are also "nice" apartments about 2 blocks away, Briarcrest, which are available too. Good Luck!

Thanks for the info, otis 🙂

Again - depends on what your expectations and needs are. I would hardly call Briarcrest "nice" - while they are serviceable and clean and many do live there for the convenience factor, they are decidely "low rent". Call me an apartment snob but I prefer more amenities and fewer dirty faced kids and unemployed men lying about! <img border="0" title="" alt="[Eek!]" src="eek.gif" />

What do you think of the Rosedale Apartments? Do most of the students not living on campus have apartments in Hershey or somewhere else?

I consider Rosedale to be less desirable than Briarcrest. Rosedale looks so dark- similar to university housing -aka "the kennel". At least with university housing, it is easier to socialize with other students and it is much closer to the hospital. Especially for first year students, I think university housing is a wise choice.

I agree with Kimberly Cox, Briarcrest is hardly a chateau on the hill, but considering the rent, it is not bad. Briarcrest is light and roomy, but very 1960ish. Some of the appliances are very dated. If you are willing to spend more money for a better apartment, consider Hershey Heights.

Thanks for the advice!!!

I didn't like Rosedale either. Most students who don't live on campus either live in Hershey or outlying communities. I live in East Harriburg, about 7 miles (or 12 minutes) from campus in some nice "luxury" apartments; many of the residents live in the same complex. Downtown Harrisburg is about 20 minutes away.

Hershey Heights is nice, about a 3 minute commute from campus. Rather pricey and a LONG list of rental requirements (ie, you have to pay first and last WITH YOUR APPLICATION, instead of a measly application fee), but certainly convenient and nice.

The housing office should send you info about local rental properties. If not, contact the Chamber of Commerce and they will send you a free packet with rental housing guide, etc.

THank you for all your help, Kimberli. 🙂
