Hello!

I'm fairly new to posting on sdn, but here's my first thread:

I'm trying to decide between Penn State and EVMS. Was hoping people here could help shed some light on pros / cons of each school.

Factors:
-I'm OOS for both, so cost is fairly high either way (EVMS is $56k vs. Penn state's $50k)

-I'm fairly certain I want to be in primary care, so I'm not hugely concerned with prestigious research opportunities that may be more beneficial for subspecialties

-I haven't actually been accepted (or even visited) Penn yet. I'm trying to decide whether or not to even attend my interview. I've already started filling out paperwork for housing at EVMS, and interviewing (then waiting 1-2 months for a decision) at Penn seems like it would screw up timing if I did end up going to EVMS

-I THINK Penn State might have more name recognition (correct me if I'm wrong here?). The only real reason this matters to me is that I absolutely want to return to California for residency. So I guess the REAL question of this thread should be this:

Would name recognition from Penn State make any actual difference in getting a med/peds/FP residency spot here in Cali (assuming of course, that I do well on rotations, step scores, etc.)?

Thanks for your help, everyone!

=D

This thread belongs in the pre-allo school specific section but I somehow wandered in here. EVMS sounds like the obvious choice for you as Penn State isn't really prestigious at all (outside of college football). You're already accepted and EVMS gives excellent clinical and primary care training. My interviewers told me that a lot of the class match back to CA.

Oops! Heh...thus revealing how noob I am at using sdn still.

Thanks so much for replying anyway!

I'm an MS2 at Penn State and I have no complaints about it. You would get a solid education from either school. A lot of it depends on financial aid and where you want to live (PSU is very rural, which for me at least, is a huge downside). If you have any specific questions about PSU, feel free to PM me.

I hear great things about Penn State. I have a friend that just finished MD/PhD there. Loved it.

Don't know much about EVMS though. Good luck.
