Hey everyone, I am lucky enough to have gotten into a few medical schools. I am a PA resident and received acceptances to Temple, Penn State, and Drexel medical schools. To me, these are great medical schools and I am so excited to start this year! I do think I am a little hesitant to go to Drexel simply due to their main hospital closing down though... However, with regards to Penn state vs. Temple, I am a little unsure of which one to attend. As far as location goes, I can see myself at any of these locations, rural and urban, so that does not make any real difference to me... I received decent scholarships at both schools so total cost (with CoA included) makes both locations roughly equal $$$. I am a little unsure of the comparative rank of each school though, but as far as PA schools are concerned, this is the rank I think of:

UPenn > Pitt > Temple = Penn State = Jeff > Geisinger > Drexel

I would guess the above is true on a general level, however, looking at the minute details and in terms of rank/research opportunities/prestige/match lists, can anyone rank Temple and Penn State in which one is ranked higher than the other and explain the reasoning behind it? Please ignore Jeff and the other schools as I am mainly concerned with Temple and PSU. I also know that for a lot of individuals, location and cost make a big difference, but please ignore them in your evaluation as they have no impact for me for the reasons stated above. Thanks!!!!

I think it shows in the voting, but imo:
Temple > Penn State. You’re asking specifically about research opportunities, rank, prestige, and match, and I think Temple wins on almost every front. Temple outdoes Penn State 2:1 in research opportunities ($70m in federal research grants vs $36m). Rank and prestige generally come from the US World News rankings (unfortunately— although I think they are losing some credibility) which ranks Temple at 66 and Penn State is totally unranked (based on research— I assumed you’d care more about that). Finally, according to PD rankings, residency directors rank applicants from both schools very similarly. So I say go Temple! Plus, Philly sounds a lot cooler than Hershey, but I wouldn’t know!

Good points! I will say that Penn State does not participate in US News, its not that they are unranked, which makes this decision a little more difficult for me.
