A coat is on sale for 25% off. If the coat on sale is $24, what was the original price of the coat?

Okay I did it like this...
25% of some number equals 24. Which is the same thing as .25X=24.
X=96.

But thats not the answer the answer is 32. What am I doing wrong here guys.

You found out what 25% of the original price was. Now you have to subtract it from the original price to get the final price. So it'd be X - .25X = 24

Yeah, you're solving as if $24 is 25% of the original price. Think of how you would solve it from the original price x...

x - .25x = 24

Original price MINUS 25% of the original price will give you the sale price.

You are thinking about it the wrong way. 25% off means that 75% of the original price is 24 dollars. your equation should be 3/4x = 24. x = 96/3 or 32 dollars.

($24/$original) *100 = 75% since u r only paying 75% and that's 24 dollars.
now solve for original$
