Can anyone point me to more information on this medical path? I've been doing a ton of research and from my understanding it's really just a mix of a few different specialties. From the link below, "It is a new and innovative medical specialty that merges the goals of internal medicine, anti-ageing medicine, sports medicine and preventative health care." Is this something that is gaining traction? Would an IM residency with sports medicine fellowship be the way to go?

Thanks in advance,
Al

I see there are a few hospitals/clinics with programs in this area.

Bumping this thread.

Any conversation on performance medicine and/or anti-aging would be much appreciated.

Bump. I'm also really interested in this.

Glad you bumped this thread. 4 years later, I've finally made it to medical school and I am still asking the same questions. I've been going back and forth between whether FM or IM (or maybe even PM&R) is best. I'm thinking IM for me since there appears to be more ability to get involved with basic and transitional research.

Congrats! You made it 🙂

Yeah I have always been incredibly interested in fitness, performance, quality-of-life etc compared to the pathology aspects of medicine. I'll be applying to medical school next year but barring some epiphany I'm pretty set on doing something of this nature. From the research I've done, PM&R seems to be the most versatile and pliable specialty that gives you the most complete and well-rounded knowledge of the body. Furthermore it's something that is not clearly defined, which could be a drawback but on the other side makes it very flexible. With a strong vision I think it fits in perfectly with the type of medicine you outlined in the original post. Doing FM/IM/EM is also a great option if your ultimate goal is to do something in sports medicine, of course.

Ultimately I think it's something you (and hopefully me!) will have to get creative with since there is no distinct path to it from what I've seen. As the population gets older, athletes continue to have longer careers (See: Tom Brady and James Harrison), and humanity just advances in general, this type of medicine can only become more prominent.

Have you tried posting about this in one of the general sections? It might get more traction.

Sounds like a snake oil selling field where doctors don't take insurance, take only cash, and fork out non substantiated medicine and supplements based poorly designed studies. E.g. Take hcl for acid reflux, take xyz probiotic for rheumatoid arthritis, take liv 52 for liver detox.

Sorry if I sound skeptical.

My bad. I was speaking out of my behind. When I hear the word "anti aging" medicine it is associated with dubious clinic and red flags go up

Of course PMR is not that.
