I'm a final year med student, and I'm gonna be doing a Perioperative Care clinical elective this winter at a big-time anesth program, so wanted to know if any of you guys could suggest some books that might make my month in periop. a little bit easier.
The school is only gonna provide a CD with some pdf's on it, so I wanted to get something I can read up a few weeks before starting. Thanks in advance.
Are you spending the entire rotation in the preoperative clinic? Or are you helping the resident in the PACU with post-op recovery? Or both.
You should familiarize yourself with: Post-op weakness, respiratory failure, initial ventilator management, indications for intubation, acute post-op hypertension management and etiology, acute postop hypotension and management, acute pain management, hypo/hyperthermia, cardiovascular/hypovolemic shock and early management, anaphalaxis recognition and management, arrythmia recognition and management and mental status changes. If you have those issues down you're set.
Unfortunately all of those subjects draw from multiple sources.
So what do I recommend?
Anesthesia Secrets, MGH handbook of anesthesia procedures (you can carry this stinker with ya and read it in the PACU and Clinic), and Parts of Morgan/Mikhael. I suppose you could also get Anesthesia Secrets and Baby Miller. Either combo will work. I just don't want you to become overwhelmed with too much info....did I mention Anesthesia Secrets?

But I have no idea if its anygood. Looking through the index it seems ok and it may be worthwhile to pick up a used copy. However I wouldn't take it over the above mentioned books. Those badboys are tried and true.
Clinic stuff will draw from you IM months your 3rd year and you really won't know whats really important until you do several months of anesthesia, or have the residents/attendings tell ya whats most pertinent on exam/history/what crap you need to order. So, don't sweat clinic.
