perks of being a MD

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
(i'm assuming this is a joke so...)

In NY, I think you get MD plates. This way, muggers will know be waiting outside your parked car since you're so "rich."

Sweet.

As unfortunate as having MD plates would be (I can imagine trying to change lanes and getting the finger, etc as someone keeps the "rich doctor" from changing lanes), it is however sometimes necessary in NY to get parking near hospitals.

At least in surgery ... you get to wear pajamas and comfortable shoes to work and no one cares; also, shaving is optional.

...maybe I should say, in surgery in academics...

Perks of being an MD someday...

I don't care what any journalist who bashes our field or what any pessimists here say repeatedly over and over and over... I still think the general public does (and still will when we BECOME doctors and get older) for the most part see our profession as something to at least be respected and admired. Even if that status drops a little, we can someday still show people we do a damn good job and are damn proud of what we do for people.

Is that NY only?

My father is a physician in NY, and he doesn't have MD plates. Did for a time, but got rid of them. I don't think its mandatory by any means, as you have to pay an annual fee for them. You can get them in a few other states too, I think.

What are the tangibles and intangibles?

besides some money, independence, and chicks chasing you..........

You mention 'independence' - sadly, this is no longer applicable. God damn government (and stupid voters).

* Job Security
Even if there is a nuclear holocaust, there will still be little tribes of mutants scuttling around who need the services of a medicine man (or womyn). They won't offer a retirement plan or free legal service to fight off the inevitable lawsuits, but they would probably let you get first dibs at meals, and you could have a sleep in anyone's tent you wanted too. Sweet!

A big perk of MD's is the innate right to bash DO's.....

j/k

I thought of that one too! I remember hearing about the days when an M.D. would get you seated in any restaurant without reservations.

from the physicians i've shadowed...

it seems like drug reps are constantly bringing free lunch to doctor's offices.. and will take them to play golf whenever they want.. if the doc can put up with the rep for a while

don't be hating DO's, they do everything you do plus more sucka 😉 (just playing around- not trying to start MD vs DO)

If you cared to notice, he/she is going to a DO school!!!!!

..ya...so? im going to be taking your allopathic residencies!

muah HA HAH AHA!

i hope you are joking- i take offense to your discriminating remarks

You can use this line: "Trust me I'm a doctor" in every concievable situation.

I'm keeping my EMS plates as long as possible.

this thread rocks,

trust me, I'm a doctor.

in California, you get an MD sticker which allows double-parking, parking in red, etc, during "medical emergencies"

You get chased by all the gold diggers who only want you for your money and want to suck you dry so you can pay everything for their 3 children of previous marriages. And then cheat on you. Repeatedly, while you are on call and their kids are at school.

that's so sad

Oh god who is that blessed specimen in your avatar?

I never understood that one....what the hell does your occupation have to do with dinner? How is that relevant at all?

if a cop pulls you over for speeding you can always say that you are on call and that you are needed at the hospital.. Im sure they'll let you go, and maybe even lead you to the hospital...

My Bio Prof once told us a story about how his brother was pulled over for speeding in New Jersey. The cop tried to pressure him into giving him a bribe at first. Somehow the Prof's brother mentioned that he was a doctor and the cop completely changed his tune. According to my prof, the cop said that if he had known that the guy he pulled over was a doctor, he would have let him go with a warning.

Seriously, if you are so afraid of this happening, don't marry a *****!

I'm a speed demon, so this is a big perk for me. 😀

Very much officer discretion on this one. I've heard from / know of lots of LEOs that are biased in favor of medical staff, whether it be EMS, physicians, what have you. On at least one other firearm/LEO-oriented forum I read, someone best put it as "I don't want to ticket anyone I may need to go to later."

Seriously, if you are so afraid of this happening, don't marry a *****!

In Cali you can get a sticker if you are a doctor that automatically lets you go 15 mph over the speed limit. That is why I am becoming a doctor! Me and my LEAD foot.

thats the recipe for a LEAN night

Since this is a fun thread.. Ill just say that you could know MORE then many people!!

And with speeding ticket thing.. I think that avoiding the ticket depends on the cops mood and your dialogue..That may not be a slam dunk!!

You don't have to be called Missus.

Yeah, just nurse... 🙁

In-laws are less likely to hate you

I imagine that is probably the truest statement here.

Unless this were actually the case, I don't think I would be able to pull that lie off. My hubby's a cop, and I haven't even figured out how to work that into the conversation to get out of a ticket. Thus, I figure I may always drive around wearing my white coat so I don't have to work it in, they'll just see the MD on my name tag. 👍

Perk to being a doc - you get to see things that no one else does (and probably very few people would want to).

For those of you saying that some states have statutes specifically allowing physicians to travel above the posted speed limit in case of medical need/emergency: have you got any links substantiating this?

I'm awfully curious.

(Does TX have a similar thing?)

I wrote about the cali one. My friends dad has one on his car (ive seen it) and we got pulled over and it worked. I guess you could find it on the dmv website though.
