Hi,

I am an international student and will be graduating from highschool in 2 months. I have been offered a place at Queen's and UBC, and I'm seriously considering to go to Canada hoping that there will be a way for me to enter a medical school.

I heard that becoming a permanent resident/citizen in Canada is more laxed than other countries. I have a friend whose parents applied residency as an "investor" and got it in 1 year. My question is, since Queen's and UBC are prestigious universities in Canada, if I pursue my education there, will I have a chance to become a Canadian resident in few years time? I'm quite obsessed with this, because it's very very rare for an international to be admitted to an American medical school!

I seriously need help on this topic, because this will be pretty determinal as in whether to go to Canada or not. Is there anyone here who knows someone who has become permanent resident as an undergrad student?

Thanks for your help!

I don't think I know anyone who became a resident after having a student visa. ALthough I do know that it is easier to become a citizen in Canada than in the US. I suggest that you contact the Canadian embassy in Korea to inquire (I think that's where u said you're from in your other post).

Bonne chance!

If you are talking about immigration at skilled worker catagory, you have to get bacholer degree first and preferrably have some working experience before applying for the immigration. So, as an undergraduate with student visa, it is impossible to apply for immigration to Canada. Immigration at investment catagory, though, is a different story. Because of the many, you can get permanent residency possibly in one year.

I believe this is correct. It will be alright as long as you have the money. Otherwise you will need to get a bachelors and get a job (or get married) before you can start the process.

Thanks for your reply!

I've talked with one of the officers from UBC a month ago, and although he doesn't know much about immigration he said that it may be possible if I find a part-time job from research/community service or something. Then the employer from there could write me a reccomendation letter. Is this a possible appraoch in becoming permanent resident?

you might wanna google canadian immigration discussion forums, i'm sure you'll get more responses.

all the best

Hi,

This isn't about immigration but your choice of schools. Between my husband and I and his bro & sis we have 8 degrees from Queen's. I'd think twice about going there looking for the kind of grades you need to make it into medical school. Maybe an easier school where you could get high grades would make more sense. (I'll likely get slammed for that one way or another). But for real. Queen's doesn't hand out grades and the pre-med program is very competitive.

Good luck. S-

I think she said that she's been already offered a seat at Queen's and UBC. She was just wondering if she could somehow become a citizen through student visa.

Although I agree that it's more sensible to attend an easier school to get the marks needed to get into med school, I think it's a bit offensive. Who's to say that he or she won't be able to handle the workload and get or even surpass the said required GPA?
