Hi all,

I have always been wondering if a Permanent residence status when you are applying to medical school will have an effect on getting interviews. Are considered to be an international student and will medical school have a preference or biased towards US citizens. Or is there like a three level thing where US citizen are the top then Permanent resident then international applicants?

Because I can apply to us citizenship right now but I already applied this cycle still having permanent residence status. It definetely makes the process a little more complicated as most school asks you to send in a copy of your green cards.

Thanks.

I m in the same boat as you i can apply for citizen but still a PR. I definitely think that PR are not considered international. If i remember correctly only one school which is the military med school in Maryland only accepts citizens. for those who ask for the green card, i don t know if they have a preference for citizens, i just think of it as another unknown in the equation of getting accepted. But as far as getting interviews, i have a few intervies and at schools that asked me to send in my greencard too so i dont think it is a big deal.

I agree with you 100% that they require more from us as Permanent Residents (especially paperwork in state in Georgia).. however I think they look at citizens and permanent residents the same. It might vary from school to school but I think we're looked at the same for the most part. I don't plan on going for my citizenship any time soon and I have 3 interviews already (including OOS schools) so I think you're good. No worries👍:luck:

it's the same
you pay taxes..

You will be asked by some schools to prove you're a permanent resident (e.g., by sending them a copy of your green card). But aside from that, you're treated in exactly the same way as a citizen when it comes to admissions and financial-aid purposes.

You are fine. Only real foreigners are treated as second-class people.
