I know people have gone into great deal about responses from PDs, but what if you received a personal phone call from the PD saying that we like you and then after hearing that I would rank them number one, him saying "see you in July"? Does this mean I'm good or is this just PD talk that they do to applicants? I'm just going crazy cuz they're my number one but I don't want to think that this is in the bag and then come match day I open up the envelope and be ****faced. Any feedback is welcomed.

If they're your number one, rank them number one. Nothing you do could possibly make any difference. You'll just have to find out for sure on March 19 like the rest of us.

You will never know the answer to your questions until March 19th. Until then it's all talk.

A comment like that is the best news one can hope for at this point. People automatically say that comments like that are worthless, but you also have to consider the fact that most PDs don't even bother returning emails/phone calls, especially for more competitive programs.

Thanks for the responses...:scared:

It's positive news, but not money in the bank.
Just rank them #1 and see what happens...the comment is definitely reason to hope.

I think it's good news. I dont see why PDs would waste their time calling you unless they really wanted you. I've received several calls, emails from PDs and one from the chair. Usually, it's stuff like we really like you...blah blah blah, but other's have been more direct like "you are assured a position here" or "you are ranked to match". Anyhow, it sounds very reassuring to me. So congrats!

Sounds pretty good. Last year I had a PD tell me I was ranked to match, that he was allowed to offer one prematch and had already given it away, and if things had gone differently he would have given it to me. A few months later , I am not sure what happened, but apparently the guy he had previously prematched was gone (whether he dropped out or whatever) and he offered me the prematch position which I took.

I think you can trust the PD if he says you will be there in June. The PD I mentioned above told me the truth, and was not just fluffing me so that I would rank them highly. He did lie to me about other things, and I have had PD's clearly lie to me this year on the interview trail - but nonetheless I think if the PD gives you assurance you will be there if you rank them highly you can count on it.

Plus as others have said, the fact he called you is real good evidence that they like you. I have only had one PD call me - actually I was sent an email to call him... but none the less, my eperience has been PD's don't pick up the phone for everyone

I think it means they are ranking you "super-secret #1" It is something each program director gets only once every two years and completely bypasses the match and makes sure they end up with the applicant they want. You should be very honored.

In all seriousness, don't try to game the match and don't play the games the program directors play. As others have said, it is probably a good thing, but don't adjust your list based on any of it. Rank the places in the order in which you'd like to match and let the chips will fall where they may.
