The DO, which is a magazine published by the AOA, had an interesting article called "Personal statement advice: Tell a story, experts say"

SDN audiences, whether premed applying to medical school, or medical students applying for residency, would find this article interesting (and perhaps insightful).

I personally don't put much weight on personal statements when reviewing applicants for residency and fellowships - but others might. My personal advice - don't make it too long ... going through pages and pages of material for multiple applicants (whether it is from AACOMAS or ERAS) ... long essays/personal statements makes me :wacky: ... keep it short, to the point, and meaningful (like a good progress note). Not sure if @Goro would agree or not.

Anyway, here is the link to the article

Thanks for posting group. Love this magazine. Would love goros input as well.

I haven't read the article yet, but thanks for bringing it to our attention.

My view on PS is that it should answer two questions:
Why Medicine?
Who am I?

It should NOT be used to provide excuses for why you didn't do well on MCAT or your GPA. That's for secondaries or interviews.

When my students apply for residency, their PS's are more like "this is the road I've travelled, and this is what draws me to this specialty and your program."
