Now that I've almost recovered from the MCAT scores and getting ready for Round 2 in August, I'm planning on submitting my AMCAS appplication. I'm satisfied with my personal statement but I was wondering how appropriate it would be to include a brief sentence or two about my future volunteer position at a hospice. I can understand the "iffyness" of this because adcoms might think some people will back out of the committment but I am positive that it would be a post-secondary experience I can add if I submitted my AMCAS later.

My post-secondary experiences are ok. Nothing that really stands out but I think the hospice thing will. However, because I am still in training for it, I don't want to enter it yet but at the same time, I don't want to wait until August when my training is done to submit my AMCAS.

So I'm thinking if I somehow smoothly incorporate it in my PS, then adcoms will know about it without me having to send out a ton of update letters in August. I plan on applying to 20+ schools.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

if you are training for it right now, you might as well add that in the amcas. just put down the date you started training and just put "present" as the ending date. it means you are still continuing that activity.

and you can add something in your personal statement about it as well. do both.

Hmmm... i thought we were supposed to put an approximate end date (ex: march 2005) for activities that we were currently doing and planning on continuing for a while... Anyway, yeah, I have a similar problem: I want to list the stuff I'm doing next year, so it doesn't seem like I'm just gonna be a lazy bum, but I'm not 100% sure of what my plans for next year are yet... I know I'll be volunteering at one of two places, so I'm listing that on the postsecondary part.

Thanks! I will do both!

I have added it to my post-secondary experiences in AMCAS and tried to smoothly put it in my PS. The first part of my PS mostly talks about my experience in the ED and then I briefly mention the hospice care.

"Being in the Emergency Department can be extremely frantic at times. I have seen and heard about people doing things to their body I never imagined possible. I have seen people, both young and old, trying to hang on to life for as long as possible before finally letting go. Having to deal with death of patients is almost inevitable in the medical profession. My decision to become a Sharp Hospice Care volunteer gives me the opportunity to have first-hand experience in dealing with such an emotional and traumatic event."

After that, I have my conclusion paragraph and that is all I mention of it. Does it sound too "choppy" and fluffed?

PLEASE HELP! I would greatly appreciate any advice/comments!
