I have been attempting to write a personal statement for a couple of months now and I have gotten only half a page of text on paper. I have come to the point where I refuse to write anything because I am afraid that there may be a better way of writing it or something more worth while that I might be writing about. Can anyone offer me some advice as to how to approach the personal statement? Should I just write whatever comes to mind and then go back and proof it? Perhaps send it to a 3rd party essay revision group (ie. essay edge). If anyone could give me some advice it would be much appreciated! THANKS!
Sincerely
Brian

I found it very helpful to talk to someone about why I wanted to go into medicine. I used my pre-med advisor and my english prof. Then, either they wrote down what tehy thought was important when I was talking, or they told me what they heard me saying. I think that defined three or four ideas that I wanted to talk about. It was about 3 pages once I wrote a draft, and I cut it down from there.
Also, I talked to someone who essentially wrote his biography, and then realized what had brought him to this point, and then he used that as a starting point for almost all his essays and statements (including secondaries) as a resource.

Write what you feel you need to write and then you can revise it a gazillion times afterwards, but put it down on paper at least to see how it runs (and remember, you CAN write more than one essay and choose).

If you know doctors, university people, medical school staff or students, get them to peer edit it for. Get them drunk enough so they'll tell you the truth it sucks and write expletives all over your paper so you'll get the truth.

Remember, DO NOT ASK PEOPLE THAT WILL JUST WIPE YOUR ASS. You want someone to trash your essay.
