The personal statement that I wrote includes separate anecdotes about my brother and a child who I have been seeing in the hospital the last few months. I vaguely describe their situations and impact on me only using their first names. I did not mention when or which hospital it was for either.

One of the people who read and commented on my personal statement said that I should just say 'my brother' and possibly change the kid's name to protect patient confidentiality. I think that it takes away from the flow and memorability of the paper to keep saying my brother or to change the name of the kid come interview time.

Can i just leave my PS how it is with the names, or am I obligated to keep it confidential?

If the hospital is named in your experience section, someone who knows the child may recognize the child in the story. I know of a case where this happened... the mother of the child was on the adcom. 😱 What's more, after the AMCAS was submitted the child died. The mother read the essay after she came back from the funeral. 😱😱

You can certainly give your brother's name but say "Al (pseudonym)" the first time you mention the kid and then just use Al (or any other really short name - to save characters) for the rest of the essay. Review your AMCAS application the night before each interview to refresh your memory.
