Personal Statement Editing Service?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
First sticky on this board 😉

Unless of course you actually expect others to make edits for you... I'm assuming you meant more along the lines of "review."

I actually need a professional editor not just a reviewer or proofreader. I know there are many online editing service providers that would turn your first draft into a professional one. I just can't decide which one is good.

Is there a point at which a professionally edited ps is no longer a personal statement?

300% agreed.

OP, I think you'd be wasting your money. Personally, the idea that you can't get your own personal statement to a point where is submission-ready suggests that you must be either lazy or incompetent, neither of which bode well for a career as a health professional.

I think some of the responses here might be harsh. Writing is a form of art. Some people aren't as good at writing as others, even though they would make an excellent dentist. Having someone help with the phrasing of his experiences is not a big deal IMHO if it will make him feel more confident and help paint a better and more accurate picture of who he is.

I didn't get help with my PS, but that is because I enjoy writing. In undergrad I preferred writing intensive classes, but everyone is different.

I'll accept that my wording may have been a bit a bit harsh, but the message is not. The OP stated that he is looking for someone to "turn [his] first draft into a professional one." Like doc inclined, that piece is most definitely NOT the OP's work.

It also suggests that the OP's personal statement is lacking in content, and that he (or she) is trying to find a roundabout way to find someone to tell him what to write - another big no-no. There is an entire list of people on here who have offered their crit services for free. I've personally done about 15 PS's this cycle, which is probably about 14 more than what the OP has read. I daresay that I (along with my fellow reviewers) have a relatively decent grasp of what is or is not acceptable/desirable in someone's PS. If s/he isn't capable of taking whatever criticism is received and modifying his or her own personal statement using his or her own words, then that suggests more than simply "not having the talent of writing."

Dentistry is also a "form of art". No problemo; as a practitioner he/she can always ask a colleague to put the finishing touches to "make him/her feel more confident".

I really do not know what the OP's intentions are. I'm just trying to be as helpful as possible. I'm not going to jump to negative conclusions. I'll just assume he wanted someone to help piece together his thoughts/experiences in away that still let's his PS remain unique and personal.

Trust me, I have more reason than most to be tired of the type of people you describe. I have had to deal with people that went to such lengths as plagiarizing entire papers to succeed in their classes. Or having others simply do their work for them. But let's give the OP the benefit of the doubt.

Obviously it will still be my personal and unique statement/story!

LOL.....It's funny! You call me lazy and incompetent?! Let me look at your signature one more time...

"34 and moving on to career #3. It wasn't pretty, but I'm in...

DAT breakdown 7/7/11"

I suggest changing your sig before judging people like that. Thanks 🙂

You are absolutely correct! Some people don't have the talent of writing...But, they might have many more talents which you probably don't have. So, what is the big deal?

I don't know that I would spend a bunch of money on such a service. I don't gather that a personal statement makes much of a difference unless it is horrendously awful or extraordinarily stellar. I would hope you aren't in the bottom category, and I don't know that a professional editing would put you in the upper category--it'd probably make your PS seem more "polished," but the "awesome" factor comes from the experiences and characteristics that you convey. Just come across as a decent human being who is capable of writing coherent sentences and I think you'll be fine, provided the rest of your app is solid.

As someone who is not a good writer, I understand your frustration and intention. However, your wording may portray you as an easy rider for some here.

You may receive more help than others to reach the level, but you cant expect someone to do it for you. My friend spent 100 dollars for editing purposes, but she told me that it was a so-so.

I suggest you go up to someone who Is great in writing and KNOWS you and ask for help.
