Personal Statement for re-applying

So, I'm going to re-apply, and I'm curious about the personal statement. In my previous AADSAS personal statement, I addressed how my personal history and obstacles strengthened my will to pursue a career in dentistry, and that it happens to be a career choice that combines personal and professional goals.

So, for my re-application, should I stick with that essay, and maybe add in a few details about what I'm doing in preparation for re-application, or should I write a totally new essay?

What kind of issues/directions did anyone else go for?

I had the same issue with my personal statement. I am re-applying in May as well but chose to go an alternate route this time. My original statement talked about my desire to become a dental professional and my goals post graduation but I felt it was time for a change. Because this won't be my first re-application cycle, I chose to discuss how 2 consecutive years of rejection letters has affected my will and determination (along with some key elements from my previous statement). I have been able to gain additional experience and exposure to other areas of the field that I also wanted to discuss. If you feel you have a solid statement already, just find a way to include additional information or you could even leave it alone. Its really up to you seeing as it is a personal statement. But it never hurts to make something better.

I showed my original essay to a couple of professors that have helped out many students who blazed the path before me. They tore it apart. Basically one prof. took three sentances from the first one, ripped everything else and said write an essay on those three paragraphs.

I had it edited by three english majors, three professors and some peers. Needless to say it sparkled. I wonder if Temple even read it before they accepted me? Oh well.

I guess my answer is then, depends on how good the first one is. Let a couple of people answer you honestly in this regard and go from there.

I suggest you rework the entire personal statement. If all you've gained from this year of not getting in is already in your old personal statement then try another direction all together-for example, instead of why you want to be a dentist you could talk about what it is that makes you want to help people in need generally. I applied to some of the same schools two years in a row. At the interviews the interviewers had both personal statements. While I'm not entirely convinced that the interviewers labored over them as much as I did, they did at least skim them both and asked me about them. I suggest you write another statement from scratch and have some trusted people review it.
