Hey guys,

I am a reapplicant for this cycle 2011 and I know I can not submit same personal statement that I used for last cycle.

Do I have write new whole personal statement or can I change my previous personal statement and submit that?

any clue?

Thanx

Depends upon your situation.

Did you get an interview last year? Also, if your grades were too low last cycle, the adcoms may not have even read your PS.

At any rate, I think if you just make a few small changes here and there, you'll be alright. In fact, I don't think you have to make any change or write a new personal statement all together, unless you think that you current PS is dismal.

Only re-write and edit if you are inclined to do so.

I did not get any interviews last year, two schools were under consideration though. I think I read that AADSAS says they do not accept same personal statement for current cycle I guess.

I am not sure. My GPA was 3.45 and 3.6 for science and AA 18 and PAT 19.

Thanks for your reply though

What have you done since the last cycle to improve your application, what new experiences have you gained, any other updates?

All of those things should be mentioned in your new personal statement letter.

^ good advice. I think if you did not get in, admissions wants to see how you are more qualified this cycle. Higher GPA, higher DAT, better PS, and new experiences should all help to improve your chances, and I think you should mention any improvements in your PS. I personally rewrote my PS this cycle. I think it was good to start from scratch, I came up with some new ideas and it sounds much better. Also, I did not want to appear lazy by just editing my old PS. If rewriting your PS is the difference between dental school or rejection, it would be worth it to rewrite it!

realistically, how will they know if you used the same PS? Do you state you are a reapplicant on AADSAS? Otherwise, I would think the schools trash last cycle's applications once the incoming class has been formed.

For those who re-applied, did you state that you are a reapplicant in your PS? or just write it like it's your first time applying?

You don't have to rewrite it in your personal statement letter, if you don't want to. Because they already know you are a reaaplicant because on AADSAS you will answer:

1. Have you ever applied to dental school prior to the present application cycle?
2. Have you previously, or are you currently applying to a health profession school other than dental school?

Some schools do not trash your application and save them for one year maximum.

I'm in the same boat, reapplying and considering just tweaking the PS I already have. I did a LOT of work on it and did over 10 revisions with an English teacher. How important do you think a brand new one is? Also I'd like to submit my app in the 1st week and I haven't started a new one yet. A new one will take a few weeks for me. Any advice? Do I really need to write a WHOLE new one? I will be re-applying to the same dental schools (because I applied late last cycle, did get one interview and then waitlist)....do you think they'll have my old one on file, compare the 2 and see that it's not a completely new one? I haven't done a ton on new things this year....

ok...I called NYU today if they want me to write whole new PS and they said 'yes'
Now I have to start to write new PS
can anyone call any dental school and check if we have to write new PS?
I'm so freaked out now

I am also reapplying. I don't think you have to change your personal statement if you don't want to. I mean if you wrote about why you choose dentistry, your experiences, and what qualities will make you a success, I don't really see them changing much over a year. Now if you have done major stuff on your year off and feel like it's noteworthy then include it. But other than that I wouldn't worry about re-writing the entire thing.

I applied two cycles and used the same personal statement, and applied to the same schools. I felt the first one was so good that I still wanted to tell the same story. I did change a few things and made sure that the information was current (ie. mentioned what I have been doing since graduating etc). I got accepted into more than one school, one of which I got an interview for the year before, but had to withdraw my application. Point blank, I think you're fine as long as you explain what you've been doing the past year.
