I've heard that if you're applying to straight MD, and somehow you let slip that you're interested in research or a PhD, that you'll for certain get rejected. So then would it be a problem if I briefly discuss in my personal statement for straight MD the fact that I'm also interested in medical research as well as helping patients as a doctor? Thanks.

What? Top schools would enjoy hearing you like research and want candidates that have heavy research experience. Now if you say you want to go for a PhD why would you be applying for an MD in the first place? Of course your personal statement should not be all about how much you love research but that can definitely be a part of why you want to be a doctor.

MD schools are all pro-research (not stating they are all research schools just that they like research) and you will find many medical students applying to residencies with a few publications. Don't be afraid to talk about research interests. However, the question may come up where you have to explain "why MD only and not PhD or MD/PhD?" Make sure you are able to handle yourself in that situation.
