Hi everyone,

I've already written three different drafts of the personal statement and am happy with the one I have right now and I was hoping to get the application out of the way this weekend.

But, after hearing different things, I got stuck and confused! So I was hoping for some clarification.

In my personal statement I talked about the influence of my parents and then talked about why I would want to enter Dentistry.

Now, how much emphasis is placed on the personal statement? And what kind of emphasis?

My Science GPA is 3.3 and overall its 3.5, I'm taking the DAT's in a few weeks.

Thanks!

Your personal statement is your chance to let the adcoms "hear you". They have all these stats and resume info, but this is where they can find out about your personality and motivations before the interview. Check out the info on this site about writing essays. It really helped me come up with my truly personal statement. I wrote several that were good, but they weren't me and I was stuck, too, until I started just telling my husband about my passion for medicine and it clicked. Get other people who know you well to help you put your story in your essay and really show your passion, what you've learned and what you want to do. Remember that they'll be reading 1000's of these, so yours should stand out (within reason) and show your honest desire to be a dentist. Good luck!

Thanks for your input, that actually helps a great deal! 🙂

I don't think the personal statement really matters too much. I think a crappy one might keep you from getting an interview but I don't think a personal statement matters enough to GET you in. Don't worry about it too much.
