I am re-posting from my previous post, because I feel those of you who havn't started your persoanl statement need to read this to save some kind of time in the writing process.

The personal statement is tough part of the application. I went to a kaplan personal statement workshop last week, and I would like to share the information they gave me.

Basically - you want to express the following types of values/qualities you posses - without actually saying it directly. Thats the tough part. Give examples of events in your life that make you:

kind, caring, ability to listen, expressiveness, artistry, gentleness, people's person, family values, community, hardwork, independence, diversity, character, uniqueness, creativity, intelligence, problem-solving skills, originality, integrity, empathy, warmth, emotional stability, concern, stamina, good language skills, dedication, perserverance, ability to make positive contribution to society - the list goes on and on.

For example, the story when you solved the end of the week puzzle in your 2nd grade math class - shows problem solving skills.

Lastly - your statement should reflect TWO things 1) Character 2) Uniquenss
Hope this helps

Good luck and have fun writing!

thanks for your positive comment !!!

Ian, great post 🙂 Thanks for sharing the info.

Ian,

Do you mind telling us a bit about yourself (whatever you feel comfortable sharing)?? you have a very interesting character.

Some good things in that post, but also some things I disagree with.

I've read dental personal statements as an interviewer for the dental school. I've been on the other side of the table, so to speak. That's where I draw many of my conclusions from when it comes to personal statements, coupled with my English degree.

hi! i am a pretty good student with a fair gpa and have quite a bit of these extracir. activites going on. i am about to apply to schools and i have never been so scared in my life.
i know that i am a good student and have the ability to not give up, cause i never have, but there is always that "what if??"
my overall gpa is around 3.5, science 2.9-3.0 and i havent taken the DAT's yet. any advice?

hi, i think of myself as a very unique and intellegent person. i have alot of background and therefore have been exposed to alot of things in life that have made me learn. i want this more then ever and i feel that going through "things" have made me realize it. im honest, smart, get the job done, hardworking, and dedicated, i just need to get my foot through the door to show them that i can do it.!!!
