Hello,

I was wondering where I could find the most credible info. on what to write and not write on my personal statement? I have complied together a few online sources and one book source, but I wanted to hear your opinions on this:

I moved to the states as a young child from a warring nation where my people were in the process of being cleansed from this Earth by the other nation. Not going to throw out any names as that isn't on my agenda in regards to this post. My family and I have practically struggled our the whole time here as we came with nothing more than the clothes on our backs. Would this be okay to write about, or should I avoid this as maybe it seems like the story is too dramatic compared to other students' who have no such backgrounds?

Also, don't forget, I'm looking for more sources.

Thanks 🙂

I think that med schools like diversity in your class and your background definitely makes you a diverse and interesting candidate. As long as you focus on how your journey inspired and prepared you for a career in medicine it should be fine.

I'll echo Sarah_Sonny's response and say that as long as you transition into the reasons and experiences that show you want to become a doctor, then you should be fine.

I'm not an adcom, but I imagine reading hundreds and hundreds of mostly similar personal statements can become dreadfully tedious. Your unique background can only help you be a more memorable candidate when your name pops up in interview discussions.

Agree with the above posters as well. Your story shows a level of maturity, insight, determination, and perseverance that many ADCOMs are looking for. Now all you have to do is connect the pieces between your challenging background and your desire to become a physician.
