If I mention a desire to do primary care in my personal statement, would it negatively impact me at a non primary care oriented school? ( say a ranked research school etc)

Probably not, but I would be more general anyway. Talk about long term patient relationships, encouraging healthy lifestyles, etc.

you can tailor your PS on a school by school basis I believe?
- there are definitely schools it will help

like gonnif said, you don't want to sound anchorless, but if you can articulate in a thoughtful and specific way why primary care, I think that's fine

as you said, for some schools you might want to be less vague on your burning itch to be fam med or what have you
