I'm an English major and published several essays, poems, and short stories. I plan on focusing/incorporating this into my personal statement. Would it be pretentious/a waste of time to include small clips of my work in my personal statement or should I stick to the basics? Thanks a lot for your advice!

I think that you'll find that space is hard to come by, but if you can tactfully fit it in, go for it. 👍

I'd be very careful. Unless it fits perfectly into your statement, I wouldnt do it. I dont think they really care how good you are as a writer and even if they do, your personal statement should be able to reflect that without the excerpts.

you can list your publications later in the application (or on secondaries) . . . the personal statement should really be used to show them why you want to be a doctor. If you put bits of your writing in they may go "why doesn't this person become a writer, they are obviously good at it and they have a passion for it." That is definitely not what you want them to think if you are serious about med school!

Depending on the school, they may allow you to send supplementary materials, at which time you may be interesting in sending a piece of work or two, or recognition for some of your work. But if you are a good writer, then write your personal statement in a way that shines and that it also becomes a piece of work that is as good as the clips of the others you want to send.

Best wishes. :luck:
