One of the main reasons why I want to be a dentist is the independence you get from owning a business. I'm motivated by my fathers experience starting a business and since I was young, he pretty much brainwashed me into being independent. How do ya'll think ADCOM's would feel about this motivation? Of course I want to help the public but does going into dentistry because I want to be independent make me look like i'm more interested in making money and having a good quality of life than spreading oral health to the community? I ask because its the basis of my PS. Would love some feedback, thanks!

i'm the same way, so i can relate 100%, but since it wasn't the most important reason for me to go into dentistry, i didn't mention it. i think it's fine to mention it, but don't make it sound like you're in it for the money 😛

If I was an Adcom, I would ask "then just do your own business." "you can serve the oral health community by selling/delegating materials" etc etc." In my opinion, you should solidly answer WHY dentistry. Business is a perk, but it doesn't fully answer the question....

But in the end, what do I know! I'm applying first time to hehe. Take my word for a grain of salt👍

Hey Rainee, I hear what you're saying. I do have many reasons for why I like dentistry and incorporate them into my letter. What I'm trying to get across is that my independent mind and a childhood event led me down a path to dentistry. You could say it laid a foundation for my eventual desire to be a dentist so perhaps if I use that as a set up to answer the most important question of "WHY DENTISTRY?????"

It's better than the "I want to give people a better smile" crap they hear everyday. Be honest. Unless it looks bad, then lie to make it look good.

But personally, I'd rather hear about all the steps you've made towards your business goals...management skills, finance abilities, leadership and guiding a team of workers...etc. Less that you have a goal you've done nothing towards.
