Is is appropriate to mention my dentist's name that I shadowed in my personal statement? or should I just mention as Dr. X? IMO, I think it's ok to mention your dentist's name since he/she will write you a LOR. any thoughts? thanks in advance!

Im putting his name down, but thats just me.

When I wrote my PS I put the name of the dentist I shadowed down. It helped because at one school the interview knew her and we could talk about it.

Even if you're applying to a school where no one would have ever heard about the dentist you shadowed, it sounds a lot more natural to use their name instead of "Dr. X".

A 22 will usually trump the name of the dentist one shadowed.

If it makes your PS read smoothly to include his/her name, than by all means do so. If it's not necessary or you're doing it just to name drop for a certain school, than don't.

There is nothing wrong with using a Dr. name in the ps. However, once used, in all likelihood you will end up with a ps that is peppered with the name Dr. XYZ. The ps then starts to look more like a testimonial to Dr. XYZ, which Dr.XYZ probably would not mind showcasing in his waiting room. Unfortunately, the ps is about you, the applicant, not about how great Dr.XYZ is in dealing with patient or how good a clinician he may happen to be. And voila we have a ps that looks like this post.
