hello again!

This has to be the toughest part of the application - the personal statement. I went to a kaplan personal statement workshop last week, and I would like to share the information they gave me.

Basically - you want to express the following types of values/qualities you posses - without actually saying it directly. Thats the tough part. Give examples of events in your life that make you:

kind, caring, ability to listen, expressiveness, artistry, gentleness, people's person, family values, community, hardwork, independence, diversity, character, uniqueness, creativity, intelligence, problem-solving skills, originality, integrity, empathy, warmth, emotional stability, concern, stamina, good language skills, dedication, perserverance, ability to make positive contribution to society - the list goes on and on.

For example, the story when you solved the end of the week puzzle in your 2nd grade math class - shows problem solving skills.

Lastly - your statement should reflect TWO things 1) Character 2) Uniquenss
Hope this helps

Good luck and have fun writing!

also, focus on one thing or event and expand it to draw a mental picture of yourself. rather than talking about 10 different things so that you can incorporate different adjectives about you.

your personal statement should be like a memoir, a short short story, instead of descriptive list of adjectives.

then give it to your english professor 43 times for revisions. that's all!
