Personal Statement....

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
mine talked about a) why I want to be a dentist, b) why I would be a great dentist, c) (specifically in my case) how my low GPA does not mean that I am a weak applicant.

keep it succinct and to the point. These adcoms are reading thousands and thousands of essays, and almost all of them are near the word limit... you think they have much patience to read yours in detail?

to get mine started... i just started writing. i think i wrote 3 pages of utter crap. then i went back and picked out the parts that really meant something and elborated on that. sometimes a free write is the only way to break writer'sn block. good luck!!! 🙂

My essay described my evolution(perspective, understanding) from highschool to college graduation. I described the events and experiences(Volunteering, living abroad, working)that lead me to my decision to pursue dentistry.

But that is just one approach. I read an essay that was 90% about sailing boats, and he apparently got in somewhere. I say this all the time; you can right about almost anything as long as it is coherent.

Is it important to choose a theme in personal statements? Because mine so far is just a bunch of random stuff describing my past that shows how i'm able to be a good dentist!

posts appreciated

Okay, Im reapplying this year, because last year I applied but did not take the DAT. This August I will really take the DAT.

About personal statement. I already have written last year and it was edited by one of the predental committees at my school. I am editing it again now to include my shadowing experienced last summer. I wonder if I will have it edited by the EssayEdge, its just expensive though. Is anybody here tried Essay Edge? Is it worth the money? Thanks

thats the problem im having....should i write about why i want to become a dentist (because i bet ALOT of people are writing about this...and its basically all the same) or should i venture into something other than that....

ughghghghghghgh :scared: :scared:

For my 2 cents, the AADSAS application says that you should address what a dental education means to you and why you want to be a good dentist and why you would be good. That being said, you probably SHOULD write about why you want to be a dentist and why you would be good, without making it seem like you are going on about yourself. I guess this is like what they told us all in middle school writing classes "show, don't tell".
