Hey everybody!

I am having the biggest trouble starting my personal statement. I have gotten so many clues on what to write but, I just dont want to do anything wrong like sound too cocky or anything. I need some help starting it out, any ideas?

Force it. I had trouble starting as well, but I just sat my ass down and started to pound it out. You may want to make a list of things you want to include in the essay first, then refer to that as you write the essay. Also, be prepared to write multiple copies; it's almost never the case that anyone gets it perfect the first time around.

Oh, and before anyone comments, my "pound it out" remark doesn't mean that I started to masterbate incessantly while trying to write the essay...in case anyone was wondering. 😉

The thing you want to do is SHOW, not tell admissions committees about yourself. They already know if you're smart, academically capable, etc... you need to show them why you want to go into medicine. don't worry about how you sound, just let it come from the heart, then go back and edit it. for me, when I write, I think about it in the car, at the store, etc., before I sit down and actually write the statement. Think about a time where you really wanted to become a physician... etc.

If you're worried about sounding arrogant, make sure someone reads it who is impartial (i.e. not your mother). If you sound like a prick, they'll let you know.

best thing to do is go thru the personal statement writing workshop that can be found on the sdn homepage.

gluck with the personal statement...it was a bitch to write.

Actually, that works

search the internet for personal statements for any graduate program. You'll find something that will help you "pound it out".

If you need help getting started on your personal statement, I've devoted a section of my website to this part of the application process. I'm a first-year medical student now, but I dug up the list of questions my undergrad premed dept gave me to prepare for the personal statement, which were incredibly helpful. I've put them up for anyone to look at, and I'm thinking of just putting up my personal statment to look at as well. Feel free to check out the list of questions at:

Good luck!
