Personal Statement

I've been thinking about what I'm going to write for my personal statement (I'm not applying for next years class obviously) and wondering how much is too much information. I really became interested in medicine when I was diagnosed with SLE (Lupus) last year. I had a rheumatologist apt yesterday and am in medication induced remission! 😀 I didn't even need labs. I know that this had a very large part in me deciding to do medicine. However, if I tell them that I have a chronic illness do you think that would hurt my chances of acceptance? I've been doing really well in school (was doing better on prednisone but glad to be off that drug). Or would it be best not to mention it and write about something else?

To OP, I say - pour your heart out! I wrote about a very traumatic event my mother experienced because learning about it was a wake-up call for me and very much influenced my decision to do this, so I think whatever has influenced you, if its close to your heart, it's appropriate. And good luck with your recovery, I wish you health.

hi... slightly different question... i'm not sure what to write for my personal statement for mph programs. whereas for medical school most students have volunteer stories, doctor shadowing experiences or various anecdotes that can be related to wanting a career in medicine, i'm not sure what to say about why i want to pursue an MPH. i think a knowledge of public health is immportant for future physicians so that they may understand the dynamics of the populations in which they practice. however i'm afraid to say that i want to be a future physician b/c i'm afraid that will cause the admissions committee to look down upon my application.
any help would be greatly appreciated. thanks.

i think its pretty simple. why are you interested in public health outside of the clinical aspect. why do you feel it is important to understand the social, economic, ecological, and cultural influences on health and health status. Why are those aspects relevant to your professional career. What can a MPH do to help you further your goals, i.e. cultural competency, understanding of the biostatiscal/epidemiological analysis of health. What are the aspects of health policy and planning that affect public health. Public health is such a broad subject area that its hard to give spefic advice. That might be the best advice there. have a specific area of public health oyou want to pursue and tailor a statment to that.
