hey, i have been training some of my friends and people at the gym for free since about my 2nd year of college - could i list that as an activity when i apply for admissions?

it's a pretty big part of my life as i am a intermediate bodybuilder (i don't compete or anything, but i do exercise medicine research which stemmed from my own training and my training of others)

thanks

Are you a certified trainer? If yes then I think you could put this on your app. If not, I think you can put weight lifting/body building as a "hobby/interest" but I would leave off the anything about training your friends.

I think you could possibly swing it as volunteer, non-medical... but whatever you choose to classify it as I would definitely mention it if it's important to you. Especially if it is something that has made you think about and research about the human body. Any extracurricular or activity you list is fair game for discussion at an interview. For you it sounds like this would be a good subject to discuss, especially if it has influenced your desire to go into medicine.

yah, i'm actually a non traditional post baccalaureate...

my love for personal training (i'm not certified, and i don't intend to get a certification) led me to learn more about the human body on my own and how it adapts to stress (mainly lifting weights) to figure out how to get myself bigger/stronger

and i have a passion that has translated into me helping others (not just my friends) but random people in the gym who ask for my help, and i assist them wholeheartedly...(diet, sleep, fluid intake, etc.)

it was a big part of why i decided to leave my career in finance to begin the path of medicine and especially the reason why i decided to volunteer my time to help some PIs with exercise medicine research, so that's why i was wondering...

I would put all of that in your app, especially the research you do. You should also include this story in your personal statement as it shows how you first became interested in medicine.

thanks for the reply....i was always interested in medicine as a teenager, but all the 'medicine going to hell' stories steered me away into finance when i got into college, but now i feel like even if it is going to hell, i'd rather be in hell doing medicine than doing anything else where i'm miserable and depressed

thanks for your help

a personal trainer is an actual job, not a hobby (I know, I'm one, both certified and was hired as one).

I think its something to mention on your app but def do not label it as Personal Trainer say fitness or otherwise, I know a few friends who did just that.

why do you say with such certainty that it has to be an actual job in that wages must be earned for offered services?
