Uworld says that you treat pertussis infection (with a macrolide) during all phases of the disease (Catarrhal, paroxysmal, convalescent).

Conrad Fischer in Master the Boards pg 437 says "Erythromycin or azithromycin aids only in the catarrhal stage, not in the paroxysmal stage".

Which is right? (At least for step 2)

it depends what the question is asking.....if your goal is to decrease transmission of the disease to others, then you treat in all phases. If your goal (aka the question) is specifically asking about shortening the disease process, then it is only in the catarrhal phase. MTB is referring to shortening the disease process.

Just recently had a question on this in UW and that's exactly how they explain it. It's to decrease the transmission of disease in paroxysmal phase, rather than treat.
