As some of you may know, the base closure bill before Congress right now has targeted Walter Reed Medical Center, home of the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology for closure. The AFIP is an amazing resource for pathologists and hosts many courses (one of which is a rad-path course that most rads residents go to). It would be a travesty to see this resource lost.

There is a petition going around to the head of the base closure committee to preserve the AFIP. I think we need to participate in this petition and do whatever we can to keep it open.

The petition is at: http://www.petitiononline.com/SaveAFIP/petition.html

All you need is your name and an email address (which will stay private). Please take the time to help preserve this great institution.

Thanks

looks like we're too late... 🙁
WASHINGTON - A federal commission voted Thursday to close Walter Reed Army Medical Center — the crown jewel of U.S. military hospitals — as part of the Pentagon's sweeping proposal to restructure bases across the country.

Just because Walter Reed is closing doesn't mean AFIP will be lost. It can, and likely will be relocated. Support is still needed.

My understanding is that they're moving to a combined facility in Bethesda.. I doubt they're going to mothball AFIP in any meaningful way.

Yeah, the residents here were pretty up in arms about losing such a valuable source, but one of the fellows pointed out that the AFIP was being absorbed into Bethesda. I wish I had the news link he showed me now.
