for people who have already started dental school, do you or anyone you know have pets? just wondering if you are really too busy to have a dog while in dental school. I don't think I can go another 4 years without one. How long are you usually gone during the day? Thanks so much for your help!

My parents got me a puppy for my birthday a few months ago... I am a DS2. Is it hard? Yes... but not as bad as I thought it would be. Some days I am gone a long time, but others I get out early, or have a break to go home and let him out for a bit. I also live relatively close to school so I can do this. I do think it would be much more difficult to take care of a dog during first year. It was good timing in my opinion because I have time to train him this summer.

its doable, but i would say it would be better for a dog that you've already had for awhile. reason being is that you need a few months to adequately train the puppy, discpline it, etc. leaving a puppy alone for a few hours at a time can affect its personality growing up. also, you cannot just throw a puppy/dog into a kennel/crate right out of the womb. they need to be trained for that. in the first 2 years, you will really only have time to come back during lunch hour to let them use the bathroom. that will also mean that you need to live within walking distance of school. despite what people will say here on SDN, you will have plenty of time AFTER classes to tend to your dog. if you can't spend 2 hours/day NOT studying, then you've got probs. that should give you enough time to take your dog out for runs and playtime. several of my classmates have dogs, but they do also have signifigant others who aren't in dental school to help give attention to the dog.

thanks so much for the help, guys. i will be a D1 at UDM in august, so i was hoping to get the puppy as soon as possible to spend time with him all summer before i start. my apartment will be 20 min away from school, so there's no way i could go home at lunch. however, my boyfriend (we live together) will likely work ~5 min away so could come home at lunch.
PS - i'm getting a pug so exercise/ taking it for "runs" isn't really an issue haha
