Found this on the ASTRO website . . .

The Department of Radiation Oncology at UCLA Medical Center has an immediate opening for one (1) PGY2 Resident Physician to start training on July 1, 2007. One position has opened unexpectedly in the program, and all candidates will be considered. To apply please submit a copy of your CV, personal statement, undergraduate and graduate transcripts (photocopy is acceptable), USMLE scores, and three letters of reference.

this is the 3rd program that i know of that has an open position...and people say spots dont open up...good luck to all of you who qualify to slip into these spots!

What other programs had unexpected openings?

Good luck everyone!

I heard a rumor that the department at UCLA currently lacks a chair and has only two clinical faculty members.

i dont think people 'scrambling' for a spot, or even those who slip in from another specialty really care about programs in transition...as long as they just get in.

It seems as if there are a lot of openings this year. Is that typical? Just trying to see if I should go for the transitional year should I not match and then hope to slip into a PGY-2. . .:scared:

and utah just opened a spot this year too for immediate entry...see the other post.

yes you should this is exactly why you should do a preliminary year directly out of med school if you do not match...you never know what opens up.

also, i would do a preliminary year vs a transitional. if, ultimately, you do not match, a prelim medicine year will count towards an IM residency whereas a transitional year does not. search other posts for peoples opinions on this matter...

and now SUNY.

again for all of you who didnt match who did an intern year after med school...you all would be eligible for the 6 positions that opened up during that year!

The only reason not to do a prelim year is if you are an abysmal candidate (i.e. received 0-1 interviews and/or failed multiple rotations and/or are somewhat offensive at interviews) and need to build up your CV or if you have the desire to go to a top program rather than a mid-tier/low-tier program. Then, you may need that year. You have to be willing to delay your training 1-2 years.

I got three offers at the end of my prelim year. I would think it's silly to sit out a year unless you're in one of the above situations.
